The program

Real therapy, sharpened by comedy.

CGT was developed from a clinical observation: creative professionals — actors, musicians, writers, visual artists, and designers — present with high rates of anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and rejection sensitivity, yet are often underserved by traditional psychiatric care. Standard group therapy models can feel incongruent with the temperament, identity, and lived experience of creative professionals. CGT meets them where they are.

“Comedy is not a distraction from mental health work. It is a vehicle for it.”

Humor requires the same cognitive and emotional skills that therapy seeks to build: perspective-taking, cognitive flexibility, tolerance of discomfort, vulnerability, and the ability to construct a new narrative from painful experience. Each week builds on the last — CGT integrates evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities with principles drawn from improvisational comedy, stand-up performance, and narrative storytelling.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Learn to catch the thoughts that run your mood — and rewrite them the way a comedian rewrites a bit that isn't landing.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Practice sitting with discomfort instead of fighting it, and moving toward what matters — on stage and off.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Build real-time skills for emotion regulation and staying present — the same presence improv demands.

Who it's for: creative professionals and anyone curious about a different way into therapy. No comedy experience required — the craft is the vehicle, not the price of admission.

Program goals

What you'll leave with.

By the end of the 6-week program, participants will have:

  • Developed greater psychological flexibility and cognitive reframing skills
  • Reduced shame and self-criticism through normalized vulnerability in a group context
  • Strengthened interpersonal connection and reduced isolation
  • Built a personalized toolkit for managing performance anxiety, creative blocks, and rejection
  • Created a personal narrative that integrates difficulty with resilience and meaning
  • Identified clear strategies for post-group maintenance and ongoing wellness

Held to a clinical standard. CGT is evidence-informed, and we treat that seriously: MetroNP administers outcome measures before and after every cohort, and is pursuing a university research partnership to build the program's evidence base.
